Hello my friend! I'm Allyssa Powers, Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC-S), and I'm on a mission to fill the gaps in our learning about practice and business ownership. Raise your hand if you were taught anything about private practice in grad school . . . cue crickets! Well, same here.
I had to learn everything the hard way about building and sustaining my own practice. I read tons of business books, listened to podcasts and made SO many mistakes along the way. However, even with all the trial and error I had to do I still absolutely love owning and running my small, but mighty practice and I am in love with the business side of things.
However, most therapists don’t feel this way. I get it. You went to school to be a therapist, not run a business. Many of us were taught we shouldn’t get into private practice. Not until we've “paid our dues”. This toxic belief leads to burnout, unhappiness and keeps too many good therapists playing small.
Here’s what I discovered . . . .
I have a deep passion for helping other therapists find success and avoid the confusion that often comes with starting a business. After seeing so many clinicians burnout under poor working conditions and low pay, I realized building my own practice had given me something invaluable: the ability to cultivate a career that I don’t need a constant vacation from.
