What Grad School Didn't Teach You About Being a Therapist
When I first stepped into my role as a practicing therapist, I quickly realized that my graduate education, while thorough in theory and foundational concepts, had left some significant gaps. The transition from student to practitioner felt like jumping from a textbook into the deep end of human complexity. That's why I created my YouTube channel—to bridge that gap for therapists who, like me, discovered that real-world practice requires skills and insights that weren't covered in our clinical training programs. I love personal finance and business so that is a common topic we discuss on my channel as well!
The Heart Behind YouTube
My passion for supporting fellow therapists stems from a simple truth: we're all in this field because we want to help people heal and grow. Yet too often, new therapists find themselves struggling not with their desire to help, but with the practical realities of therapeutic work that graduate school simply didn't prepare them for. From low pay to burn out, when I talked to other therapist I realized I was in the vast minority of new grads that seemed to be thriving in my role.
Graduate programs excel at teaching us diagnostic criteria, theoretical frameworks, and ethical guidelines. They provide supervised practice and controlled environments where we can develop our basic clinical skills. But there's so much more to being an effective therapist that falls outside the scope of traditional academic training.
What Grad School Leaves Out
Through my own journey and conversations with countless therapists, I've identified several critical areas where graduate education falls short:
The Business Side of Therapy: Whether you're in private practice or working for an organization, understanding insurance, billing, marketing, and client retention is crucial. Yet most programs barely touch on these practical necessities.
Self-Care Beyond the Buzzword: We hear about burnout prevention, but graduate school rarely teaches the specific strategies for maintaining emotional resilience while absorbing others' trauma day after day. The reality of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue hits new therapists hard.
The Messy Middle of Therapy: Academic training focuses heavily on intake processes and treatment planning, but the middle phase of therapy—where real change happens but progress feels slow—gets less attention. How do you maintain hope and momentum when both you and your client feel stuck?
Technology and Modern Practice: From teletherapy platforms to electronic health records, the digital aspects of modern practice are constantly evolving, yet many programs lag behind in preparing students for these realities.
Creating Content That Matters
My YouTube channel exists to fill these gaps with practical, real-world guidance. Every video I create comes from a place of genuine care for therapists who are navigating these challenges. I share not just strategies and business tips, but also the mindset shifts that can transform how you approach your work.
The feedback I receive from viewers reinforces why this work matters. New therapists tell me they finally feel prepared for situations their training didn't address. Experienced therapists share that my content helps them articulate concepts they've learned through years of practice but couldn't quite put into words.
Building a Community of Growth
Beyond individual videos, I'm working to create a community where therapists can continue learning from each other. The isolation that many therapists feel—especially those in private practice or small organizations—is real and counterproductive. We need spaces where we can share challenges, celebrate successes, and continue growing together.
My channel serves as one such space, but it's also a starting point for deeper connections. I encourage viewers to engage with the content, share their own experiences, and connect with other therapists who are on similar journeys.
The Ripple Effect
When therapists feel more confident and capable in their work, the benefits extend far beyond our individual practices. Better-prepared therapists provide more effective treatment, which means better outcomes for clients. They're also more likely to stay in the field, reducing turnover and maintaining continuity of care for the communities we serve.
This ripple effect is what drives me to keep creating content. Every therapist who watches a video and feels more prepared for a challenging session is potentially impacting dozens or hundreds of clients throughout their career. The investment in therapist education pays dividends in human healing and growth.
Looking Forward
The field of mental health is evolving rapidly, and therapist training must evolve with it. While I hope that graduate programs will eventually incorporate more of these practical elements, there will always be aspects of therapeutic work that can only be learned through experience and mentorship.
My YouTube channel represents my commitment to being part of the solution. I'm dedicated to continuing to identify areas where therapists need support and creating content that makes a real difference in their professional lives.
If you're a therapist who's ever felt unprepared for the realities of practice, know that you're not alone. The gap between academic training and real-world application is real, but it's not insurmountable. With the right resources, community, and commitment to ongoing learning, we can all become the therapists our clients need us to be.
The work we do matters too much to leave anything to chance. Let's fill those gaps together, one video, one conversation, one insight at a time.
